TOEFL Information

What is the TOEFL?
The TOEFL is an internationally recognized Test of English as a Foreign Language. At San Diego State University (SDSU), foreign students must have a score of 80 (iBT) or 550 (PBT). Various colleges and universities have different TOEFL score requirements.

Who should take the TOEFL?
Students who plan to enter a college or university in the United States should take the TOEFL. In addition, there are several ALI programs (for example, the Business Certificate Program) that require a TOEFL score.

How much does it cost?
Test fee is $185 for the iBT (must be paid by credit card).

How can I prepare for the TOEFL while I am in the IEC program?
Students in the IEC program have a variety of things they can do to prepare for the TOEFL.

  • Sign up for one or more Friday morning TOEFL electives. You will have the opportunity to choose elective classes during the first week of your program.
  • You can practice for TOEFL in ALI labs. Go to the computer labs (Gateway 1520 and 1530) during open lab hours and ask the lab assistants for TOEFL preparation material.

 

IELTS Information

What is the IELTS?
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. Conducting 1.7 million tests globally, IELTS is the world’s most popular English testing system. IELTS tests are up to four times a month. You can choose from two types of IELTS test: Academic or General Training, depending on whether you want to study, work or migrate. IELTS results are graded on the unique IELTS 9-band scale. Most US universities require a total score of 6.5.

Who should take the IELTS?
IELTS tests all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. It is interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get.

The IELTS costs $210.
