SDSU CampusWelcome to the IEC program at the American Language Institute. This program will help you develop your speaking and listening skills, in a natural, communicative way. Your teachers will be expecting you to participate in class, so feel free to ask questions, share ideas and talk with your fellow students. It is all part of the process for learning a language.

There are a few things to remember as you start studying at the ALI:

    • Please read the information on this blog about attendance and requirements for getting a certificate (this is very important)
    • San Diego is a safe city, but you do need to pay close attention to your valuables. It is easy to lose a wallet, a purse or a phone, and many times difficult to find it again.
    • The best way to learn a language is to use it. Make friends from different countries, watch movies, read books and magazines. Spend several hours outside of class using English. It will make a huge difference in how fast you learn English, and it will be more fun as well.
    • Please keep your class syllabi and grades for each session that you study here. Many students get credit from their home university for studying at the ALI. However, you will need to present ALI documents to prove you were here. Don’t throw away your documents.

Hepner Hall at SDSUWe are happy to have you join the IEC program. As you get settled into your classes, I hope you have a chance to read through some of the information on this blog. It will help you understand how IEC works, and what you are expected to do as a student. If you have any questions, please feel free to come into the office and talk with me. We will look forward to getting to know you. Have a great time studying and soaking up the San Diego experience.
